The soles of the flag shoes were typically made of solid wood and wrapped in white cloth. Some versions featured a white Damascus pattern or were coated with white powder, giving them a polished and elegant appearance—hence the term "foundation." The upper part of the shoes was usually crafted from silk and often adorned with intricate, multicolored embroidery, making them both functional and decorative.
As women aged or transitioned into more practical lifestyles, they often opted for lower or flatter shoes. For example, "boat-shaped high-soled shoes" became popular among older or working women, offering comfort while still retaining a touch of traditional style. Over time, the design of flag shoes evolved, but their cultural significance remained an important part of Manchu heritage. Today, these shoes are not only historical artifacts but also a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and customs of the Qing Dynasty.
