Otter republic women's low profile appeared to enter the mainland market

In a recent, intimate launch event in Shanghai, the emerging women's fashion brand Otter Republic (OR) made a quiet yet impactful entrance. The gathering was attended by designers, fashion editors, and media professionals, and although the event lasted just over an hour, it received high praise. Notably, renowned fashion commentator Tide Net Bedi expressed excitement, suggesting that Otter Republic might reshape the landscape of original women’s fashion brands in China. Otter Republic, known as OR, is relatively unknown in mainland China, but it has gained recognition through its parent company, Crown Star Group from Taiwan. Established in 1993, Crown Star Group has focused on knitting fabric research and development for nearly two decades, producing 10,000 tons of premium knitted fabrics annually. The company has long-standing partnerships with numerous international and domestic sportswear and lifestyle brands. Since 2008, Crown Star Group launched “OR Lab” in Taiwan, aiming to support the next generation of designers by offering them a platform to turn creative ideas into real products. The initiative includes an annual “OR Original Design Contest,” which has been held three times so far. OR Lab has become a hub for young talents from various design institutions across Taiwan, such as Kaohsiung Normal University, BenQ Design Institute, and the Taiwan Creative Design Center. These designers are encouraged to explore their creativity and express their vision, embodying the philosophy that “creativity is about feeling life more deeply.” After nearly three years of growth, Otter Republic has gained popularity among fashion enthusiasts in Taiwan. Despite not having a physical flagship store, most of its original designs have sold out quickly. Located in Taipei’s creative district, the brand has become a go-to destination for aspiring “Taobao” designers seeking inspiration. To accelerate growth, Crown Star Group has been closely monitoring the mainland market. With over 20 years of experience in the textile and apparel industry, the group has developed a deep understanding of local consumer trends. Recognizing the growing influence of the 80s and 90s generations—whose demand for unique and personal fashion is rising—Crown Star Group officially introduced Otter Republic to the mainland in 2011. Currently, Crown Star Group has established an R&D center in Shanghai, with plans to integrate design and development resources between Shanghai and Taipei. According to Edward, the general manager of Otter Republic Shanghai, the brand aims to promote original design in China and bring the lifestyle-oriented approach of Taiwanese fashion to young, style-conscious women. “We don’t set profit targets for the next five years,” he said, emphasizing a long-term vision focused on innovation and quality.
