The Palace Museum has completed a seven-year-long cultural relics inventory, marking a significant milestone in its history. For the first time, the museum officially announced the total number of its collections, which now stands at 1,807,558 items, including 1,684,490 precious cultural relics. This comprehensive catalog will soon be available on the official website of the National Palace Museum, allowing global audiences to easily access and verify the collection details.
Following a thorough cleanup, the inventory includes 1,684,490 high-value cultural relics, 115,491 general cultural artifacts, and 7,577 specimens. A senior official from the museum stated that this is the most accurate and complete count since the Palace Museum was established, signifying a new era in its collection management.
Compared to previous figures, where the museum had reported around 1.5 million cultural relics, this new count reflects a more detailed and inclusive approach. The earlier data only included first-, second-, and third-grade cultural relics as defined by national regulations. However, the latest inventory also encompasses 600,000 ancient architectural and historical items, such as 400,000 rare books and over 200,000 printed editions. Additionally, more than 110,000 general cultural relics and 130,000 Qing-era copper coins have been upgraded to official cultural relics.
Notably, during the cleanup, some previously overlooked historical documents were elevated to cultural relic status. These include 22,703 Qing Dynasty paintings and 10,000 red-green-headed signatures, which reflect the imperial system. Thousands of Yaopai, or guard tickets, related to the palace’s security system were also recognized as important cultural heritage.
The completion of the inventory is not the end of the process. The museum plans to select the top 150,000 most representative items from the total collection, following a 1:15 ratio. These will be compiled into a comprehensive publication titled "National Palace Museum Collection," expected to span up to 500 volumes.
To enhance transparency and accessibility, the Forbidden City is developing an electronic version of the "Roster"—called the "Collection of Cultural Relics." This digital archive will allow visitors to view detailed information about each artifact, including names, images, dates, and even previously confidential inventory numbers. By the first half of this year, the museum aims to complete the digitization of 1.6 million items, primarily rubbings of Fas’ books, which will then be made publicly available.
In addition, the cleanup effort was combined with the renovation of ancient buildings, particularly the reorganization of storage facilities, which significantly improved the preservation conditions for the artifacts. Looking ahead, the Palace Museum will also focus on enhancing seismic protection for its cultural relics, ensuring their safety for future generations.
