Xinhua News Agency: Jiangsu Cotton Planted to 350 Million Mu This Year
The traditional cotton-producing province of Jiangsu has seen a steady decline in both the area dedicated to cotton cultivation and its overall output over recent years. According to the Jiangsu Provincial Agriculture Commission, the province’s cotton planting area was 6 million mu in 2005, but by the previous year, it had dropped to 4 million mu, and this year, it fell further to 3.5 million mu—marking the lowest level in six years. This downward trend has raised concerns among local agricultural authorities and farmers alike.
Experts suggest that the decline is driven by several factors. Cotton farmers are facing rising production costs, while the purchase prices for their cotton have remained low, making it less profitable compared to other crops. Additionally, the price disparity between grain and cotton has led many farmers to shift their focus away from cotton. In some areas, losses have become widespread, prompting many to abandon cotton farming altogether.
For instance, in Dafeng, one of Jiangsu’s key cotton-growing regions, the cotton planting area has shrunk significantly compared to last year. This year, only about 400,000 mu are being used for cotton, a sharp drop from previous years. Farmers in the region say they are now more inclined to grow rice or vegetables, which offer better returns and lower risks. As a result, the future of cotton farming in Jiangsu remains uncertain, with many questioning whether the industry can recover or if it will continue to shrink in the coming years.
