Indian textile workers shift to other industries due to low wages

A survey by the Association of Indian Chambers of Commerce (ASSOCHAM) stated that higher-paying jobs are attracting textile workers from the textile industry to other high-growth industries, causing the domestic textile and garment industry to face a labor shortage, and the textile and clothing industry is facing Recruit more workers to meet the production demand challenge.

Nearly 45% of respondents said that because of the shortage of labor, their capacity utilization rate is only 50-60%, and about 30% of respondents said that their profits are shrinking because they can not meet sales targets.

The online and telephone surveys were conducted last week. The survey interviewed 100 textile companies.

Association Secretary General DSRawat said that all sectors in the textile value chain have a shortage of labor. From cotton to branding and retailing, the textile industry must pay higher wages, provide health insurance, and ensure that factories meet internationally accepted standards.

Mr. Rawat added that most mobile workers earn about 7,000 rupees per month. After the sowing season is over, they enter the city from the agricultural sector and work for half a year. At the beginning of the harvest season, they return to the countryside.

But the government's successful social sector plan is preventing mobile laborers from entering the urban areas from rural areas.
