India's 2010 cotton planting area sets a "world record"

In India, 10.6 million hectares of cotton fields have been planted so far this year, setting a new record for the world's planting area, setting a record for the 10.4 million hectares of cotton planted in the United States in 1934.

Anupam Barik, Minister of Cotton Development of India, confirmed the news. He said that so far cotton has been planted to 10.6 million hectares. With another 25-30 hectares in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, this year's early spring planting area will reach 11 million hectares.

In 2009-10, cotton planting area was 10.171 million hectares. It is mainly Maharashtra that increases about 50 hectares.

In 2002, India began planting transgenic Bt cotton. The area planted was approximately 7.667 million hectares, and it has since grown by 3 million hectares.
