Will it really change the fashion industry?

According to foreign media reports, Amazon is not synonymous with high-end fashion, but the company is preparing to use artificial intelligence algorithms to replace stylists and designers.
Researchers at the e-commerce company are currently developing relevant machine learning systems to more effectively discover and respond to the latest fashion trends, and even create fashion. These studies will allow Amazon to track the fashion trends of social media in real time, thus showing an advantage in improving its retail business. In particular, it can help companies expand their advantages in the apparel industry and even lead the field.
Cornell University professor Kavita Bala took part in Amazon's machine learning and fashion seminar last week. He said: "Companies like Amazon have been trying to understand the fashion trends around the world. Change the entire industry."
Many forward-thinking retailers are already using social networks like Instagram and Pinterest to track the latest trends and react quickly. Startups like the subscription service Stitch Fix have personalized product recommendations based on user preferences and social media campaigns.
At the same time, Amazon is committed to developing its own clothing business, developing its own clothing brand, improving the quality of the product display image, and launching the Prime Wardrobe service, allowing users to try on clothes before making sure to purchase. Amazon's Echo Look app will even give you the right outfit.
And that's not enough. Amazon is still working on more powerful feature development. For example, Amazon researchers in Israel have developed a machine learning algorithm that can infer whether a particular collocation can be considered fashion by analyzing several tags attached to the image. The software can be adapted to the fashion feedback or suggestions provided. Previously computers often required a large number of tags to learn from visual information, but in many real-world situations, such as images posted to Instagram, there may be only one tag, and Amazon's machine learning algorithm has its place.
The Labs Research Center in San Francisco, USA, developed an algorithm that learns specific fashion styles from images, and then can generate new products with similar styles. It can be said that this algorithm is a simple artificial intelligence fashion designer. At present, this algorithm is not practical, and it also implies a possibility.
Related research uses a cutting-edge tool called the Generating Against Network (GAN). It consists of two deep neural networks that can be effectively learned from raw data. GAN analyzes multiple samples to determine the attributes of a particular style, which can then be applied to existing apparel products. The GAN developed by Google Brain team researchers is also a hot topic in machine learning today.
These two projects were made public at a seminar held in Amazon. The event is aimed at academic researchers who explore fashion trends through machine learning. The company declined to comment on these items.
The seminar also showed how to develop techniques to track fashion trends to gain a deeper understanding of human behavior. Bala and her colleagues are using information collected from Instagram as a basis for anthropological research. She said: "We are trying to understand people's daily lives. In human history, this is really unprecedented, we have so many visual records."
Others are exploring ideas that can directly explore people's wardrobes. A research team from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign showed an algorithm for identifying fashioned social network accounts. A team at the Indian clothing site Myntra showed off a program that it developed to guess the correct size of a particular garment from the user's purchase history.
Tim Oates, a professor at Baltimore County University in Maryland, introduced the details of the method of transferring a particular style from one garment to another. He believes that this method can be used to design new clothing products. Oz said, "You can train an algorithm through the existing clothes, then you can design a jacket or a pair of pants on the machine, I want to adapt to my style."
However, fashion designers may not need to worry about it. Aoji et al. pointed out that there is still a long way to go before the application of machine learning in fashion. He admits, "People are also making innovations in the fields of music, fashion and film. But what we haven't seen is a truly machine-generated music or fashion style that resonates with people."
