The Fashion Revolution's Fashion Transparency Index 2018 shows that Adidas and Reebok take the lead toward a more transparent route among major company players. At the same time, the Fashion Revolution Week begins today. Gao Xi reports.
According to the fashion revolution's fashion transparency index, the world's top fashion brands have been showing more transparency, based on the social and environmental policies of 150 major brands around the world to comment and rank.
Adidas and Reebok scored the highest, followed by Hummer, H&M, Esprit, Banana Republic, Gadget, Old Navy, C&A and Marks & Spencer in the 51-60% range of 250 points. The Fashion Revolution has been tracking the world's top brands since 2016 and is rated on five key elements: policy and commitment, management, traceability, knowing what to show and correct, and special planning. In 2017, the index evaluated 100 brands and the number has increased to 150 this year. The self-owned brands evaluated in 2017 increased overall 5% in transparency.
April 2018 marks the 5th anniversary of the collapse of the Lana factory and the fifth year since the establishment of the fashion revolution. April 23-29 was adopted as the Fashion Revolution Week. The week's series of activities is aimed at getting consumers to participate in discussions about who is making clothes for us – and also to get them involved in some of the processes in this way.
According to the study, luxury brands disclose relatively few social and environmental policies and practices compared to other major brands and retailers, but this trend is changing. Hugo Boss, Calvin, Tommy Hilfer, Gucci, Baojijia, Yves Saint Laurent and Burberry in the range of 31-40%, this year Hugo Boss score increased by 11%, Calvin and Tommy Hilfiger’s score increased by 8% and Burberry’s score increased by 7%. Hugo Boss, Calvin and Tommy Hilfer announced their list of Tier 1 suppliers, while Hermès announced its Tier 1 suppliers and fabric suppliers and processing equipment.
ASOS is close to the top ten, and has significantly improved its openness since last year, followed by Levi's, followed by Les Fes, Tim Burke, Vance, Wrangler (both owned by the Weifu Group), Zhiduoxing, Zhibao and Baxka, Messim Dutt, Bear, Stradivaris and Sarah (both owned by Indy Textile) scored 41-50%.
Only 55% of brands and retailers have announced measurable and time-bound targets for improving environmental impact, while only 37% have announced targets for improving human rights. More brands and retailers (12% in 2018; 7% in 2017) - but still few - disclose how incentives for company employees are linked to human rights and environmental management. A significant improvement is that both brands and retailers have announced 'anti-bribery and anti-corruption' policies for company employees and their suppliers. Similarly, 62% of brands and retailers (up from 40% in 2017) are now publishing their problem-solving process when they find violations on supplier equipment.
